I realise I like piano-bands. *waves to shili and her band*

Maybe it's because of my early years training in classical music that somehow gravitates my ear to that familiar sound. Coldplay, Keane, Muse and now Melee, as introduced by Yanti. I like the opening strains on the keyboard of Built to Last :)

Although I'm not so fond of the waving in-and-out kind of singing voice.. it sounds a little synthetic, definitely processed with some kind of synthesiser. The lead's voice could do without it though, it sounds strong enough.

In fact, it seems like keyboard bands have all along been the trend of British bands and only now is the (un)discerning American audience finally catching on. Maybe it's cos American boys never grew up learning piano - too girly for them. They do manly stuff like build treehouses and play baseball, haha.

p.s. and no, shili or ha thi.. this has nothing to do with that matchmaking you're trying to set me up with..

p.p.s. I found the reason to my insomnia. 3 x Panadol Extra tablets. Each table = 65mg of caffeine. SIXTY FIVE MG!?!? no wonder I cant sleep lah. Until now I'm not sleepy can.

p.p.p.s. I didn't do that Corp R recap that I promised to do in the end. Was bumming around in my room watching simpsons instead. That explains the rather chui showing at the exams today :/

Actually, I like most types of music. Thanks to my musicmeister Siewj, who's been feeding me with oldies as obscure as John Legend to new sounds like Portishead; familiar favourites like Tracy Chapman and even a dash of J-pop. And I pretty much lap it all up. Most music is music to my ears. However, to qualify as good music, I have 2 criteria, the first being the most important:

1) It must have a beat. Rhythm. Something tap-worthy, jigga-licious, hum-alongable or head-bopping. Rhythm and beats are very important criteria for good music to me. This also explains why I had a secret liking for trance and techno music when I was in secondary school - a liking I daren't show in front of my atas secondary school friends. Like scully they think I'm so ah lian you know. So I went out and bought Best of Trance 200X (can't remember the X!) and I recall enjoying it in the privacy of my own bedroom... Haha.

Now, having been to European clubs which play that kind of music every night, I know that my music tastes aren't as trashy as I used to think they were :P Oh and the second criteria:

2) Melody. I mean like a normal, understandable, workable melody. Sad to say, stuff like Bjork, Eric Serra (from Le Grand Bleu) or the whole soundtrack of La marche l'empereur fit into neither rhythm nor melody. I mean, random playing of notes on the keyboard is not melody. So despite how Alex claims Le Grand Bleu to be the best french film of all time, with an award-winning soundtrack, it's (both the movie and the soundtrack) not for me. I mean, movies I dont really know much about but I think I can tell my good music from my plain bad/boring music.

So...Out it goes from my iTunes!

I think somebody has placed a curse on me. It's 4.22am, and I simply cannot sleep.

I've been trying to sleep since 11pm, lying in bed, tossing and turning. I've tried everything. Making myself in front of computer, check. Listening to some music in bed, check. Going out to watch boring 70s shows to get myself to fall asleep in front of the tv, check. I felt a little unwell, so I took 2 panadols and according to Lily, panadols make you sleepy. CHECK. Then I thought maybe it's because I'm unwell so there's something wrong so I cant sleep, so I went to the toilet and tried to GAG myself to see if there's anything I can puke out so that I will feel well again. CHECK. Then my arms felt weak, so I thought hey maybe I should eat something. CHECK.

WHAT ELSE IS THERE?!?!?! I dont normally get insomnia; I think the number of times I couldn't get to sleep in my entire life, I can count in one hand. So my conclusion? Somebody put a curse on me, confirm. Curse that I cant sleep. The bloody bugger.

So instead, here I am! Talking to my friends in faraway places (i.e. France) because it's just the right time zone for them to be online. I shall write out everything I know for Corp R and post it here. ROARRRR.

What would you do for free?

I koped this off Sheryl's blog - though I'm not very close to her but I happened to stumble upon and read her blog. She's on a semester at sea trip that takes her to many many places. Jealous? Of course :P The following excerpt from her trip in Egypt:

"Turns out, the guy serving them was the boss of the store. Tara asked him if there was anything in the shop that was worth 1 US dollar, and went on to tell him a grandmother story that she had to buy a present for her friend and it had to cost 1 dollar. I told her not to tell everyone her life story, because I didn’t think shopkeepers would take any interest. He laughed and gave me a high five. He must have thought we were poor because he picked up a small gift and told Tara she could have it for free. He then proceeded to tell us his life story.

Titto said he was a student once and he can understand how it feels to want something and not be able to afford it. He went through 8 years of medical school to make his parents happy, but his passion was business. All through college, he didn’t receive a cent from his parents, and funded himself with the profits from his little gift shop. He started his first store at 16, when he was a freshman at university. In the first year, business was so good that not only did he not make a loss; he earned a profit of US$200,000. Subsequently, he expanded and acquired more shops, and today he has 4 shops in total.

Every time we picked up something we liked and asked for the price, he would tell us the original price, and then tell us we could have it for half that price. On multiple occasions, he would tell us to remember – in life, its not always about the money. He said he went into business not because of the money. I couldn’t figure it out, what was there to business apart from the money? He said he liked sourcing for products, managing people, meeting suppliers, customers, cutting deals, that he would willingly do all those things even if he was not getting paid.

And there it was. That’s the Key. I need to find a job that I would willingly do without getting paid. That’s the litmus test. "

What job would you be willing to do without getting paid?

What crazy thing have you done to celebrate a birthday?

Well I would have to say downing 21 shots and puking in a 72-storey high toilet must rank as THE craziest thing I've ever done. Haha :P

And also getting ambushed outside my own home with cake and candles! A night to remember for sure :P

And another one with a surprise swiss guest and a not-so-surprised-but-just-as-lovely notebook cum diary cum travelogue :P

Here's to more crazy birthdays to come, celebrated with the best of friends. Prost! :)

I was doing some past year exam questions for audit when I suddenly remembered what Michael told me:

"In France, the students don't study. They only study if they need the grades to get somewhere. For example, you study in high school so you can get into a good university. Once you are in university, you don't study. Unless you're hoping to go into further studies. Otherwise, employers dont really look at your grade - other things like your interview matter more."

Which brought my pen to a stop and made me think for a while why I'm studying so hard for this.

And then oh, suddenly it hit me. It's just for this week anyway. :)

Randoms

1) I'm starting to hear airplanes take off from my window. I hear the engines being revved up, the acceleration along the runway, and the booming sound of wing-tip vortices as the airplane takes off into the night sky.

:)

i like it. it reminds me of what i hope to do, and it makes me happy to hear that i'm pretty near all the action. Although i didnt use to hear it previously. Maybe they started using a new runway? (terminal 3 comes into mind) Or maybe i just notice it now.

Anyway today was a happy day. watched shili perform and she totally blew me away and reminded me of the prowess of her vocals! She's really good. if anyone needs gigs, can look for her through me ok ;) after that i had crystal jade with ha thi - its always nice to pop into holland v and feel like an expat in your own country, haha. a strange ang moh and a chinese girl were sitting behind us. their conversation sounded like a first date.

then after that when i went to pump petrol, the uncle at the petrol station was very nice, he wiped up my windscreen and boot.. after all the funny things that fell from the tree at boys' town. so sweet :)

2) i dont like the new gatsby kimura advertisement. he looks LIKE A GIRL there.

3) there are angry angmoh neighbours/visitors outside the condo now making a racket about how the taxi driver nearly killed them on the way here. hahaha

This is the way you left me,
I'm not pretending.
No hope, no love, no glory,
No Happy Ending.
This is the way that we love,
Like it's forever.
Then live the rest of our life,
But not together.

Wake up in the morning, stumble on my life
Can't get no love without sacrifice
If anything should happen, I guess I wish you well
A little bit of heaven, but a little bit of hell

This is the hardest story that I've ever told
No hope, or love, or glory
Happy endings gone forever more
I feel as if I feel as if I'm wastin'
And I'm wastin' everyday

This is the way you left me,
I'm not pretending.
No hope, no love, no glory,
No Happy Ending.
This is the way that we love,
Like it's forever.
Then live the rest of our life,
But not together.

2 o'clock in the morning, something's on my mind
Can't get no rest; keep walkin' around
If I pretend that nothin' ever went wrong, I can get to my sleep
I can think that we just carried on

This is the hardest story that I've ever told
No hope, or love, or glory
Happy endings gone forever more
I feel as if I feel as if I'm wastin'
And I'm wastin' everyday

This is the way you left me,
I'm not pretending.
No hope, no love, no glory,
No Happy Ending.
This is the way that we love,
Like it's forever.
Then live the rest of our life,
But not together.

A Little bit of love, little bit of love
Little bit of love, little bit of love

I feel as if I feel as if I'm wastin'
And I'm wastin' everyday

This is the way you left me,
I'm not pretending.
No hope, no love, no glory,
No Happy Ending.
This is the way that we love,
Like it's forever.
To live the rest of our life,
But not together.

Birthday-related updates

As lily likes to say, yes i am self important! Haha. This is my brother's MSN nickname! Aww so sweet right haha. unless he is referring to his own bday which is also pretty close to mine.. oops :P (which I am pretty sure isn't lah but anyway)
Anyway it seems like the family will celebrate my 21st in a big day. In fact, we're going to Raffles Town Club on Sunday (the uncle has membership)! :) Yay. And maybe cos it's also my ahma's 80th birthday but you know, just maybe, that's a coincidence la. The focus should be my 21st right. Hahahaha.. :P
But its cool to have po po's bday always very near me. Then celebrate together, like this year I get to go RTC for 21st. Any thoughts on turning 21? Well... not a bad arrangement for signing my own indemnity forms from now on (not that I dont already do it...)
Back to CAT-ting. The to-do list just grows each day doesn't it.

Phew. Just finished my Learning Summary 3 - I forgot about it completely!!! Think this will be the most chui learning summary. Lufthansa interview today, i'm scared scared! :( I hope the VP will be nice and friendly and it won't be such a formal interview.

Haven't even had the time to check my hotmail, oh gosh. CAT and Corp Reporting due next week, tuesday and monday respectively. And of course, haven't had time to blog either. Except during AMA class :P

The BIRTHDAY is coming up in less than 2 weeks time, and I guess I'm supposed to put some sort of wishlist up here. But I really don't want much this time (despite it being the big two-one), so I'm just going to be thick-skinned and ask for cash. Yes, cold and hard. Any amount will do (I really should wrap up a milo tin, poke a hole and let people donate inside), preferably in denominations of 21 :)

It may sound very mercantilistic but I'm really kind of cash-strapped now, considering how I spent almost $1,200 for _____ and I still owe Mummy money from Europe and Hong Kong. I've been living off packed meals and coffee bean (courtesy of mum's coffee bean card haha)

So actually yes, the best present would be cold, hard and come in shades of purple, green, red, blue or brown :P

Thank you in advance!!!
